I remember when I was a child, we always looked forward to receiving our Advent Calendar at the beginning of each December. Early on they were just simple and inexpensive cardboard holders and behind each door would be revealed a sweet holiday picture of some kind. It was so exciting to discover what secret image was hidden behind each number as we counted down to Christmas.

As we got a little older, Advent Calendars evolved and now there was a delicious piece of chocolate that came with the passing of each day as we counted down to Christmas. They might be in the shape of a doll or a teddy bear or even Santa himself. It didn’t matter one bit that it was without a doubt cheap chocolate, kids don’t care, it all tastes the same to them.

Once I became a parent and started this tradition with my own children, I couldn’t believe all the new types of Advent Calendars that were now available. There were still many of the traditional ones with chocolate, but there were now tons of other themed Advent Calendars as well. Lego Advent Calendars, Superhero Advent Calendars, Disney Advent Calendars, Crafty Advent Calendars and so many more.

These days the tradition of giving children Advent Calendars at the holiday is still going strong and with so many more to choose from it’s become as much fun for parents as it is for kids.
