Parenting From The News Desk

Parenting From The News Desk Rachel Pierce NBC2 SunshineandHurricanes.com

As many of you know, Michelle and I are Florida girls and we live in the SouthWest part of the state.  Recently, we formed a partnership with NBC2, one of our local news channels. The station will be sharing some of our most popular tips, tricks and parenting insights each week on a segment called “Mom Mondays”!

Part of what makes this partnership SO GREAT and such a perfect fit for Sunshine and Hurricanes is that the news anchor who will be hosting “Mom Mondays” on-air is also a MOM!!!  Her name is Rachel Pierce and she has agreed to do some occasional VLOGS (video+blog = Vlog) for our readers, which we’re calling “PARENTING FROM THE NEWS DESK” Rachel has two daughters, Lydia (5) and Piper (2), AND she just announced that she is expecting number 3!!!  You can watch the adorable way she told her girls about the new baby in the video below.

Rachel is currently the morning news anchor at NBC2 and her show airs from 4:30 -7a.m.  So, that means she is up and at ’em by about 3 a.m. every morning!!! I guess being a mom definitely qualifies her for that early wake-up call. Also, while she may be soaking up the rays down here in Florida now, she is actually a native of Wisconsin (yup, totally a cheesehead) where she grew up in a household of six kids. Her alma matter is OKC where she received a degree in mass communications with an emphasis on broadcasting.  She has been married to her husband Matthew for ten years and in addition to their two kids (and one on the way), they also have a family dog. Part of what Michelle and I really liked about Rachel right away was we could tell how much she loves being a mom and what a HUGE heart she has for other moms. Just one example is the charity she recently started called “Moms Helping Moms”, which helps provide free fruit and veggie giveaways for families in need.

While we realize we have TONS of readers who don’t live in Florida, or even in the U.S. for that matter, you don’t have to watch Rachel on the news everyday to relate to her.  Her job may seem glamorous, but she is a working mom just like so many of us, trying to balance a career with the challenges or raising young children today. Plus, now that she has number three on the way, well her world just got a whole lot more complicated.

In her first “Parenting from the News Desk” Rachel talks about her and her husband’s initial reaction to finding out about baby #3. She also shares some guidelines she uses in her household with her kids to help keep their lives from getting too out of control!

Do you have questions for Rachel?? Leave them in the comments and she MIGHT just answer them in future “Parenting from the News Desk” segments.  Stay tuned!

Ever wonder what to say when your child is feeling Ever wonder what to say when your child is feeling left out? A few years ago, I watched from my park bench as a young mother tried to console her sobbing daughter. “I’m sorry, honey. I don’t blame you for being upset.” “I don’t know why they won’t let me be in their group for the talent show. They just said they already had enough people and their routine was done and there wasn’t anything they could do about it. I told them I would make a new one up, but they wouldn’t do it.” I tried to focus on my kindle while occasionally looking for my kids to exit the school door. But as much as I tried not to eavesdrop, I had to admit I was interested to hear how the mom would handle this all-too-common situation of a child feeling left out. “Well, they’re probably just jealous of you honey, because you are such a good gymnast and they aren’t. They probably don’t want you in their group because you’ll show them up,” the mom stated matter-of-factly. “You should do a solo routine. Or maybe one with Chloe.” “You think?” the girl replied, her tears slowing down. “You think they’re just jealous of my tumbling?” “Totally.” Several minutes passed before my girls came out, but the interaction between the mother and daughter stuck with me for a lot longer. Maybe the girls were jealous, or maybe they honestly had their routine finished. To continue reading check the link in bio.
